I’ve worked at every level of the electronic news business, running and creating programs as well as managing teams. This involved working with legendary anchor/reporter talent in both Canada and the United States. At every step along the way, guidance and coaching would have made me a better journalist and a more effective leader. But the news industry wasn’t wired for that as I was coming up through the ranks. Shaping and supporting the next generation of journalists makes coaching so rewarding for me.
That’s why, when I became a network executive and had the power to change things, coaching my team became a discipline and a priority. I wanted to give back everything I’d learned and help people grow, achieve, learn, and be successful.
I don’t think there’s ever been a time in the industry that coaching mattered more than it does now. More than ever, younger and less experienced people are being hired to do critically important jobs. Anything we can do to accelerate their growth as journalists and as communicators is good for them and for the organizations they serve. If coaching would help you grow the team you’re leading now, I’d love to talk about how I can help.
Fiona Conway is a distinguished North American journalist and news executive.
She served as Senior Producer of Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight, and ABC News Special Events. At ABC, she worked directly and daily with some of the most respected and sophisticated talents in the history of network television news, including Peter Jennings, Charles Gibson, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos.
Few professionals can match her experience as a producer of breaking news. Most notably, she was in the control room helping manage coverage for Jennings on September 11, 2001.
Fiona also spent five years as Executive Director of News Programs at Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The 24-hour news network achieved the highest share in its history with her at the helm, and CBC news programs and hosts garnered 22 Canadian Screen Award nominations under her leadership.
She believes passionately in supporting journalists and journalism. She has held leadership positions for both RTDNA Canada and RTDNA USA. And she has served on the faculty of the Editorial Integrity and Leadership Initiative at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism.
Fiona is as committed to working with beginners as she is to supporting the most seasoned pros. She is a remarkable resource for any team and newsroom, no matter the level of experience or the sophistication of the need.
Journalism has been my life’s calling, and coaching journalists is my life’s passion. As a manager and an executive, I’ve been in your shoes. I know what it’s like to manage people. I know what it’s like to be responsible for doing both good journalism and good television. And I know what it’s like to be responsible for the care and nurture of a diverse and diversely experienced team. You will not find a coach more sensitive to the challenges you must manage or more committed to coaching people in a way that will support your vision.
I know that doing news is a team sport. No one in your newsroom does anything in a vacuum, and no team can reach its potential without learning to work effectively together. Because I’ve worked and managed across newsroom disciplines, I can coach across them as well.
As someone who has worked with truly legendary talent, I have the credentials and the experience to work with anyone, including the most seasoned members of your team. When I ran network newsrooms, I believed no one was so good that they couldn’t be better. It was just a matter of finding a coach who could connect with them at their level. I have the chops to connect with talent and others at any level.
No matter the level of your team, you can count on me to make coaching an experience they will enjoy and value. Even when the message is a tough one, a good coach knows how to deliver it supportively and make it an opportunity for growth. I’ve been doing that for people my entire career. You can trust me to do it for you.
