Performance Coaching for Television News & Sports Talent

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words — or, at least, a thousand coaching words. In this case, the picture comes courtesy of NBC Philadelphia anchor, Tracy Davidson, who set out to graph the relationship between an anchor’s knowledge of a story and her delivery of that story.

News anchor Tracy Davidson illustrates the value of knowing more than the facts .

We’ll let Tracy’s absolutely on-point illustration speak for itself, adding only that there is an important point behind her point.

The difference between great delivery and mediocre/generic delivery is nuance, and Context is the mother of nuance. When we study the best anchors, it’s not what they’re saying but what they know about what they’re saying that sets their delivery apart. It’s not just their grasp of detail. It’s their understanding of the Context that makes that particular collection of details a Story.

Tracy Davidson

Too often, in too many newsrooms, the conversation about delivery begins and ends with discussion about things like whether we’re reading fast enough or smiling enough. Those things matter, but only if they’re fueled by something deeper and perhaps best described as what we know about what we know.

We may know, for instance, that today there was a fatal wreck at the corner of Elm and Main. But it’s the anchor who also knows something of the history of wrecks at Elm and Main that is the one with the power to make today’s story more than an exercise in expressing generic concern. And you can hear it and recognize it in her delivery — in the nuance — whether she literally says anything about that history or not.

Thanks for the coaching, Tracy. We wish we’d drawn that!
